Museums and Curators

Museums and curators are your friends
!

Developing a respected reputation as an amateur researcher is an important asset, say I at the risk of sounding unbearably pompous. Be realistic in your requests, propound your pet theory only if asked in conversation and never ram it down the curator's throat, be punctual for appointments, ask permission every time and ask nicely, follow through on the credits when you post and never forget to say "thank you".

There are several books in my reference library I use constantly and while I don't have a particular "bible" this one; Trade, Temple & Court, Indian textiles from the Tapi Collection has been a huge help in making deductions on historic decorative elements. I do use it in conjunction with several other publications to arrive at my conclusions. This collection has a nice solid core of 15thC Gujarat printed textiles and fabulously clean photos illustrating them. The content is well written and clear with specs and details that help my research and guesses.

The caveat is that one must remember the subject is export textiles and not fabrics produced for the Indian home market. However having said that my recommendation is that you order this book for your research library, it's worth every penny!
