Just a quick update, stamping and painting my length of dhoti fabric has become a test-run experiment as I thought it would.
Decided on a 2 1/2" stripe along the raw edge of the pallu which seemed an average measure when checked against the period examples.
The DFP worked well. Very well. I got a respectable level of evenness, again per period the only downside is that 25ml doesn't go far but a perfect way for me to determine production cost against area coverage. This gives me an accurate reading of how much paint I am going to need for the entire project. I also decided to go with a red border. (The paint does inhibit the woof threads from unraveling once it's set.) For a sharper edge I used Scotch tape on the marked off area to mask it on both sides of the fabric and removed them an hour into the drying time. I also removed the newsprint underneath the drying fabric so it would not dry to the painted area - carefully.
Although I hung the fabric length out to dry in the breeze it didn't seem to make any difference to the drying period. Setting the large area of dry paint was not the chore I thought it was going to be either. Now I'm refining some of the details for the pallu edge and design thereof, need to do a run into the city for some more DFP and will be working on the project as time allows.
Ultimately I am aiming at a pallu of several bands and motif as above.
